A day, whether six or seven years ago or whether six thousand years ago, is just as near to the present as yesterday. Why? Because all time is contained in now.

About This Quote

The way we experience time is based on our culture and the context of our lives. It's rare that we find ourselves in a state where time has stopped completely. Even if something feels like an eternity, it's not. We can't really say what time is.

All we know is that time does pass and everything outside of us changes and gets older. But we can't know how much time has passed. For example, we may think the day we were born is either yesterday or six years ago, but it could also be six thousand years ago because all of human civilization may have existed then as well as prehistoric man might be fleshed out as a species.

The argument isn't about whether the day we were born or six years ago was longer than any other day or number of days, but that these numbers aren't as meaningful as the present moment. The present moment is all we can really say to be right now and it should be enough to understand what we're doing and why we're doing it.
